Viagra: The "sexual
Holy Grail?"
- Three weeks into the release of Pfizer's
new impotence drug, and despite its high cost, and lack of insurance coverage, Viagra is
selling faster than doctors can write out the prescriptions!
An estimated 40,000 impotence
prescriptions for this drug are filled each day (at an average cost of $8.00 per
pill). I find that rather interesting, considering that three weeks ago you couldn't find
more than a thousand men who were impotent... or at least willing to talk about it... and
now there are 40,000 men a day lining up to get their prescriptions?!
According to a a recent article appearing
in the New York Post,
"Viagra could get the healthiest men going as strong as the Energizer bunny. .
." That seems to be a concern to many health practitioners; that "the healthiest
men" will be taking this as if it were a "sexual enhancement" drug, when it
should only be prescribed for patients who suffer from erectile dysfunction (the inability
to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for intercourse).
Another concern is that the overwhelming
success in sales of this drug could indeed create a black market for it, including sales
on the Internet. No doubt there will soon be thousands of Web sites created for you to
"Buy Your Viagra Online... No Prescription Needed!" I was able to find a few
sites with offers to write and/or fill prescriptions -"In less than 8 minutes!"
However, I will not be including links to these sites, for obvious health reasons.
Be cautiously optimistic, and remember,
this drug was originally intended for men with heart conditions, not erectile dysfunction.
Also, there's a strong possibility that Viagra will not work for you if you are not
impotent... and it could mask a heart condition. (So much for the "sexual
enhancement" theory.) If you have any questions regarding whether or not Viagra is
safe for you, contact your health care practitioner.
With sales and profits as strong as they
are right now, it's only a matter of time before they find a way to market a female
version of this "sexual Holy Grail." (As phrased in the article, "Viagra
Nation," from Time Daily.)
ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS
According to Thomas Kruzel, N.D.,
associate professor of medicine at the National College of Natropathic Medicine in
Gresham, Ore., erectile dysfunction is a condition that is quite amenable to treatment
with natural therapies.
Successful treatment relies on a physician
and patient addressing the underlying causes of the disorder rather than treating just the
symptoms. In addition to making diet and lifestyle changes, patients must be educated
about the causes of their impotence. Only then are long-term treatment and prevention
possible.
Dr. Kruzel recommends Coryanthe
yohimbe, Ginkgo biloba, Aletrius Farinosa (true unicorn root), saw palmetto, and Siberian
ginseng for the treatment of impotence. Nutrition Science News has an excellent
article on impotency, by Dr. Kruzel.
HerbaSway's Stamina, a product offered
by Reach4Life, uses a combination of balanced herbs to deliver the maximum effect of
Yohimbe. Based on what I've read, Coryanthe yohimbe has been shown to increase libido and
decrease the latency period between ejaculations, as well as have a positive effect on
impotence problems due to depression.
From the stellar Web site of Testosterone
Source - How common is testosterone deficiency as a cause of impotence? The National
Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Statement recommends that all men with impotence have
a blood test to measure testosterone levels.
